Teena Robinson- NZONA President
teena.robinson@southerncrossqe.co.nz

Hello, my name is Teena Robinson and it is my third year as the President of the New Zealand Orthopaedic Nurses Association. I am a Nurse practitioner of Adult Elective Peri-operative care with authority to prescribe. Obtaining Nurse Practitioner status was an eight year journey which at times was a struggle greater than I thought I could manage and at others a joy I felt privileged to be part of. I completed my Masters in Nursing with First Class Honors through the University of Auckland in 2006. The topic of my research portfolio “Advancing nursing practice and deep vein thrombosis prevention” is an area of particular interest to me as a large number of the patients I see are under going joint replacement and are at specific risk of venous thromboembolism.

I currently work at Southern Cross QE Hospital, a private surgical Hospital in Rotorua. My role as Nurse Practitioner entails preadmission health history taking, physical examination, education and planning, some intraoperative assisting, and postoperative clinical management of patients. Although my patients involve other specialties my main focus and passion is elective orthopaedics.

Spare time is a rare and treasured thing that is filled by home life and family. I live with my husband on a small life style block with beautiful views over Lake Rotorua.  We have three children between us and the required menagerie of farm animals, cat, dogs, chooks guinea fowl and sheep. My haven is the garden which I hide away in any chance I get. Kayaking, motorbike riding and tramping are the other activities that I try to squeeze in from time to time.

NZONA aims for 2009 are to:

  • Hold eight education mornings this year, four in the North Island and four in the South.

  • Hold four regional meetings in each Island.

  • Hold monthly teleconferences with members.

  • Promote the NZONA web page.

  • To promote the use of the NZONA blog on the web page as a means to share ideas, concerns and knowledge on orthopaedics.

  • Increase the membership numbers to 100.

  • Profile four orthopaedic nurses as part of the Orthopaedic Nurses day.
