Hi!
I am Lynley Papadopoulos the editor of Breaking News. This is the web page devoted to the Newsletter and you can access it here.

The Newsletter has been coming out to you regularly since August 2005 shortly after NZONA began.

It will continue updating NZ orthopaedic nurses on relevent news and views in the usual format as well.

Publications are released bi-monthly in April, June, August, October and December.

To access the present edition of Breaking News please go here....

To contribute to "Breaking News" please contact Lynley at papafam@ihug.co.nz submissions by the 20th of the month.

Orthopaedic Nurses' Day

This is information I received from Anita Meehan in the US about International Orthopaedic Nurses' Day.

"Regarding International Orthopaedic Nurses' Day...  CONA (Canadian Orthopaedic Nurses Association) was the first group to recognize Oct 30 as Ortho Nurses day and NAON joined in in 1990 as I recall.   When I was President of NAON I suggested that we change the name to International Orthopaedic Nurses Day as both Canada and the US were celebrating and we urged the UK to join in as well.
We encourage orthopaedic nurses to celebrate in their work places by putting up displays about the specialty of orthopaedic nursing, some will do patient information information as well. There are many creative ways that members celebrate this day."

Breaking News

Here is a little spiel about how the Newsletter came about.

When NZONA was first set up I was given the role of promotions officer. Now this sounds rather grand, and I could have visions of travelling the country spreading the word as it were. However, mundane things such as finances made this unrealistic. Maybe in the future as NZONA grows this may be possible, but not just now! I really had little idea about what I should do but I did have an e-mail list of nurses throughout the country who had expressed interest in being part of an orthopaedic nurses group. Well, it seemed that the least I could do was put together a newsletter to announce that finally we were on our way.  I initially sent it out to the executive group to see what people's thoughts were. It was very well received so it became a monthly event (with January off for good behaviour).

I debated what name could be used. NAON have NAON News, another place has Orthoscope so I pondered an name that would sound Orthopaedic. After much deliberation and coming up blank, I finally hit on Breaking News. This name also seemed to be well received so here it is.

Over time it has evolved more. A monthly crossword has been added and an article review. At the moment most of the content comes from me but I would welcome ANY contributions. It would be great to be able to share case studies and exemplars. By now we all are required to complete portfolios so it would be great if some of the stories could be shared. It can be annonymous if you prefer.

I discovered recently that Auckland City Hospital used to have an in house Orthopaedic bulletin called Breaking News. However, I can very safely claim that the naming of the NZONA one was not influenced by this.
